Reject the Governor's Coal Ash Proposal

On April 16th, Governor Pat McCrory proposed legislation regarding North Carolina’s toxic coal ash ponds, an urgent issue for the state since the Feb. 2nd spill of 39,000 tons of this toxic waste into the Dan River. There are 14 Duke Energy coal ash sites in North Carolina with more than 30 coal ash ponds, and all sit dangerously close to North Carolina waterways.

The Governor’s bill falls dramatically short in protecting all North Carolina communities from the dangers of another toxic spill. The sham bill requires the removal of coal ash from only 4 of the state’s 14 coal ash sites (Riverbend, Asheville, Dan River and Sutton coal plants), and may even allow Duke Energy to leave the rest of the coal ash in place. Gov. McCrory’s proposal represents yet another sweetheart deal for Duke Energy.
