4/25 u-news

Disturbing information...
The NRC/NMA workshop, May 1-3

states, "Members of the public are welcome to attend this workshop, though pre-registration is required.

Please keep in mind that "this is a technical meeting, not a discussion of the merits of uranium mining and milling, or of any specific existing or proposed uranium recovery sites." While NRC co-sponsors the workshop, this is an NMA meeting not a NRC public meeting. However, as a courtesty, NMA will provide members of the public an opportunity to ask questions of NRC staff members or industry presenters at designated times during or following the meeting."

it reads, The National Mining Association (NMA) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Uranium Recovery Workshop (URW) will be held Wednesday, May 1 – Thursday, May 2, 2013, at the Grand Hyatt in Denver, Colorado. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck...this is a public meeting.
The workshop is billed as a technical meeting, not a discussion of the merits of uranium mining and milling, or of any specific existing or proposed uranium recovery sites. (KM Comments:  Not so. The agenda http://www.uraniumrecoveryworkshop2013.myevent.com/3/family.htm reveals that on May 2nd Patrick Wales, Project Manager, Virginia Uranium and Andrea Jannetta, Publisher, Fuel Cycle Weekly will present The Coles Hill Deposit; An Update on Politics and a Path Forward In Virginia. How the hell does that qualify as a technical meeting, not a discussion of the merits of uranium mining and milling, or of any specific existing or proposed uranium recovery sites? This is bs.)

David McIntyre, NRC Office of Public Affairs, may be reached here David.McIntyre@nrc.gov

Ask for a transcript of Wales and Jannetta's presentation.

Comments from KM:

The prospect of uranium mining, milling and waste disposal has been, and continues to be, a very contentious issue in Virginia. Virginia's citizens, businesses and legislators are desperately working to make informed decisions regarding the risks and benefits of uranium mining, milling and waste disposal.

At present, uranium mining is not permitted in Virginia. To my knowledge Virginia Uranium, Inc. (VUI) has not submitted a permit application for a nuclear facility or to possess, use and/or disposal of nuclear materials. It is inappropriate for VUI to be addressing the NRC regarding "The Coles Hill Deposit; An Update on Politics and a Path Forward in Virginia".
The appearance is that the NRC is supporting uranium mining, milling and waste disposal in Virginia. The NRC has no authority to give legitimacy to uranium mining in Virginia.

Below is additional information (for your convenience) regarding the 2013 Uranium Recovery Workshop.
