Uranium, day care centers on Danville City Council agenda

Comments from Karen Brewer Maute

At least 4 of Danville's City Council members were in attendance @ Lt. Gov. Bowling's well-reasoned announcement on Friday afternoon. Two of them publically spoke in favor of continuing the current moratorium, as did two local legislators.
Sen. John Watkins (Powhatan Co.) indicated he will present a bill directed at lifting the ban. Our local legislators have read reports and studies, heard from constituents and have concluded that risks outweigh the benefits regarding uranium mining, milling and radioactive waste disposal. If a bill to lift the ban moratorium doesn't come from our legislators why would members of the General Assembly support Watkins's legislation to put us all at risk?
A resolution from Danville's City Council will reinforce the message that we want to continue to encourage diverse economic development in our region and offer a healthy environment for those who live here. Perhaps the actions of Danville's City Council will inspire some members of the Pittsylvania County BOS to put their egos aside and pass a unified resolution as well.

Uranium, day care centers on Danville City Council agenda
Special use permits, in-home day care centers and disposing of abandoned vehicles will all be addressed by Danville City Council Tuesday night before members meet in a work session to discuss the upcoming budget and whether to officially take a position on the possibility that the state will lift the uranium mining ban.
