South Boston shells out in uranium fight
Comments: Thank you South Boston for helping and giving voice to those of us in Pittsylvania County who are fighting to keep our health, safety and welfare. We can't even get a new resolution since the NAS study has shown risks and challenges of uranium mining and milling from our governing body.
SoVaNow.com / September 13, 2012South Boston Town Council has put up another $5,000 to fight uranium mining and milling in neighboring Pittsylvania County.
The moved came Monday at its regular meeting, and the money is the second $5,000 check cut this calendar year.
The donation will go to the Virginia Coalition, a group fighting the plan with the argument that it would be bad for health and for economic development to have such an operation in the area.
During the public comment period, Samuel Watkins of Main Street spoke against uranium mining as well as fracking.
Uranium foes say fund-raising is essential to counter what they say is the big money in the uranium industry.
Virginia Uranium has 19 registered lobbyists working for it.
Also helping to bring in bucks for the Virginia Coalition, Del. James Edmunds, a Halifax Republican, is holding a fund-raiser for the group at his River Road farm this Saturday.
