State officials studying a proposed uranium mine in Pittsylvania County will hear from the public in writing but will hold no public meetings.
The study group will, however, provide updates at four public meetings of a legislative panel.
Questions about the group's transparency arose today during a meeting of that legislative panel, the uranium-mining subcommittee of the state Coal and Energy Commission.
The study group would like to hear from the public in writing, primarily through a new website, said Cathie J. France, deputy director of the Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy. She is leading the study group.
"It's not because we don't want be transparent," but commenting via the Web makes it easier for the group to share information among various agencies involved in the study, France said.
People without computers can comment by writing letters, she said.
The study group will report its findings late this year to Gov. Bob McDonnell, who will recom
mend to the General Assembly whether Virginia's 30-year ban on uranium mining should be lifted.
The website for the study group is www.uwg.vi.virginia.gov.
