Research Council Studies Mining in VA

Comments:  Thanks AC for pushing the issue!

March 29, 2012

Scientific experts gathered in Charlottesville Thursday evening (March 29) to summarize a report on uranium mining at the Boar's Head Inn. The purpose of the meeting was to brief the public about their report that was released in December by the National Research Council.

The National Research Council's 370-page report outlined their extensive research on the matter.

That information can be found for free here: http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=13266

The National Research Council's website says their organization's "mission is to improve government decision making and public policy, increase public understanding, and promote the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge in matters involving science, engineering, technology, and health."

Their charge specifically stated they do not make a recommendation on whether to mine or not.

A previous version of this story incorrectly indicated the National Research Council recommended lawmakers allow Uranium mining. The NRC's goal was to evaluate the facts, not make a recommendation.

We appologize for the error.
