Dan River, Roanoke River Basin Associations to host May presentations on uranium mining

Sarah Fields will give a series of presentations entitled “Uranium Mining and Milling in Your Community: What To Expect?”

May 2 in Martinsville and May 3 in Danville at the Institute of Advanced Learning and Research, both from 6:30-8 p.m.

The Dan River Basin Association will host the Martinsville presentation Wednesday, May 2, 2012: 6:30p - 8:00p, Martinsville-Henry County Heritage Center and Museum,
1 East Main Street, Martinsville, VA 24112

The Roanoke River Basin Association will host the Danville presentation.

Those who attend will have the opportunity to learn what to expect when uranium mining and milling comes to their neighborhood. Sarah Fields is a citizen expert who has a first hand knowledge of the issues faces by communities impacted by uranium operations in the western United States.

She became involved with uranium mining issues in 1996 living in Moab, Utah, home to the Atlas Uranium Mill. Fields became actively involved in the U. S. Department of Energy’s effort to remove 16 million tons of toxic Atlas Mill tailings from the Colorado River.

Fields also participated in the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s licensing to permit the White Mesa Uranium Mill located six mile miles south of Blanding, Utah, to process alternate feed.

She is the founder and program director of Uranium Watch, a non profit citizens group established in 2006 thanks to a generous grant from Patagonia, a leading U.S. based outdoors clothing and gear retailer.
