Marshall showed some backbone
Comment: Mr. Marshall: We want you to vote to keep the Uranium Ban in Virginia, never been mined safe anywhere in the world, not in France, not in Canada!

To the editor:
The letter, "Writer: Why is Marshall against jobs?" (Sept. 24, page A8), was utterly disingenuous.
The trip to France hosted by Virginia Uranium was anything but a "fact-finding" venture. It should be compared to asking the fox to guard the henhouse. Are those same participants going to tour mines in the United States that have chalked up less-than-stellar performances?
Arizona comes to mind. Good for Del. Danny Marshall for exhibiting some integrity by refusing to join this obvious charade. We need more leaders with his backbone.
A great many questions have been raised in this newspaper concerning uranium mining in Virginia. I don’t recall any being answered to any satisfactory degree. To address the author’s complaint: How many folks would be directly employed by such an operation and at what income levels?
Exactly how would the county and state financially benefit, excluding more junket tours and "campaign" contributions for agreeable politicians?
Why haven’t we seen in print a map of the local aquifers, springs and rivers most likely to be affected? And should there be contamination, how would our lives be compromised?
How would the catastrophe be resolved and who would be held financially responsible for its mitigation? On that last question, I’ll give you one guess: check your wallets at the door.
Will uranium mining be a boon to Pittsylvania County and Virginia?
Has anyone looked at Arizona’s ledger books lately?
No doubt some folks will be well-rewarded should uranium mining be approved in Virginia, however, I’ll wager odds it won’t be you or me. In fact, we might see our lifestyles seriously undermined.
