Letter to the Editor: Against lifting the ban on uranium mining

Posted: Wednesday, September 28, 2011 11:19 am

Dear editor,

As a native of Williamston, N.C., and a current resident of Halifax, Va., I oppose lifting the ban on uranium mining.

The possibility of mining in Chatham, Va., has earned the Roanoke River the distinction as one of the nation’s most threatened rivers.

Bob McDonnell, Governor of Virginia, believes if the safety of mining can be “assured,” Virginia economically should be poised to “gain a lot,” possibly $10 billion at this site alone. Assurance of safe mining practices and boosting Virginia’s economy is the direction pro-uranium mining activists seek in a state study.

This committee will present findings in December with Virginia Uranium, Inc. interests at heart. VU Inc. is funding the study through Virginia Tech. The findings will come in time for the 2012 Virginia legislature to act. If the moratorium is lifted, more North Carolina rivers will become threatened.
