Pittsylvania County plans to send county economic development director Ken Bowman on a trip, paid for by Virginia Uranium Inc., to visit uranium operations in Canada.
About 15 Virginia lawmakers and local leaders are expected to tour the uranium operations in Saskatchewan, said Patrick Wales, VUI project manager. VUI organized the travel and accommodations, and worked with one of the world’s largest uranium producers, Cameco, for Canadian site visits and to arrange meetings with regulators.
The trip is estimated to cost about $3,000 per person. VUI staff will also be there.
Pittsylvania County Administrator Dan Sleeper asked Bowman to go on the trip and report back, as the Board of Supervisors need to receive input on such economic development issues, according to a memo published in the Tuesday board packet. Sleeper asked Bowman to treat it as a “fact finding mission.”
The Board of Supervisors did not discuss the issue Tuesday night, but Karen Maute of the Westover District, who is also president of Piedmont Residents in Defense of the Environment, told the supervisors on Tuesday that sending a representative to Canada wasn’t keeping in line with the stance of waiting for the National Academy of Sciences study on uranium in Virginia due in December.
