Comments: Uranium mining was part of the 2010 Energy Plan: "The Nuclear Fuel Cycle: The first step in the nuclear fuel cycle is mining and milling of uranium oxide, resulting in 0.7 percent U235., Virginia is home to a commercially viable uranium deposit at Coles Hill in Pittsylvania County. There is a moratorium on mining due to questions whether the uranium can be safely mined in Virginia’s environment. The Virginia Coal and Energy Commission is studying the safety and economic impact of possible uranium mining. http://www.dmme.virginia.gov/DE/LinkDocuments/VEP_ExecSummary.pdf

On June 4, 2014, Virginia Gov. Terry McCauliffe announced formation of the Virginia Energy Council and the beginning of a process to develop the 2014 Virginia Energy Plan.  This comprehensive strategy for Virginia’s energy industries will be an update to the 2010 plan.  The 2014 plan is to be submitted to the Virginia General Assembly by October 1, 2014.


The new Council and the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy will hold six public listening sessions to gather information to help in drafting the revised plan.  The meetings are as follows:

  • Fredericksburg June 12th, 6 p.m. University of Mary Washington, North Building, 125 University Boulevard.
  • Annandale June 17th, 6 p.m. Northern Virginia Community College-Annandale Campus, Ernst Community Cultural Center, 8333 Little River Turnpike. Parking Lots B15-16.
  • South Boston June 19th, 6 p.m.  Southern Virginia Higher Education Center, 820 Bruce Street.
  • Abingdon June 24th, 6 p.m. Virginia Highlands Community College, ISC Building – Student Center, 100 VHCC Drive.
  • Norfolk June 26th, 6 p.m., Old Dominion University, Webb University Center, 49th Street and Bluestone Avenue.Use Parking Garage E.
  • Harrisonburg July 1st, 6 p.m. James Madison University, The Ice House, 127 West Bruce Street..
