FTimes-STT Report, January 4

The nickel mining company Talivaara has been asked on Friday to stop the pumping of metal solutions back to its Kuusilampi mines, as a precautionary measure to check environmental pollution.

Kainuu Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre) said the metal solution was very acidic and and pumping back should be halted as a precaution.

The ELY Centre recommended on recycling back to the quarry water as the solution, while it could be alternatively treated to meet the required regulations concerning flowing water.

According to the ELY Centre, environmental conservation and protection was very important in order to keep water level in Kuusilampi in check, so that it does not rise too much.

There is also a risk that water containing metal might start flowing from the quarries and contaminate the environment, if the practice is continued.

The ELY Centre has also termed the recent mild weather as a problem and that it posed a risk regarding water management for the mining company.
