Virginia’s governor-elect may have surprised some with his recent shift in stance on the topic of uranium mining in Southside Virginia.

Terry McAuliffe, , went on record this week with a commitment to supporting a ban on the proposed mining of a substantial uranium deposit that opponents say, if mined and should complications occur, could have adverse effects on communities throughout southern Virginia and northern North Carolina, including those in Mecklenburg County.

According to published reports, McAuliffe made comments indicating he supports a ban on the mining to a Hampton Roads media outlet. While the proposed mining has support from some who say the venture would create jobs and boost the region’s economy, others say that the potential risks of contamination in the Roanoke River Basin outweigh the benefits.
