River District Festival features two days of music, activities:  Saturday:  10 a.m. – until – Showcase Ally. The festival’s Showcase Ally, located on Bridge Street, will feature over 40 vendors selling handmade crafts, jewelry, etc. as well as various businesses and local nonprofits

DANVILLE — The third annual River District Festival will be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4-5, and will feature a variety of activities, including musical performances by 1980s tribute band The Breakfast Club and by Juliet Simms of NBC’s “The Voice.”
The festival also includes several races, an array of vendors, and talent show.
The festival is designed to increase awareness and visibility of changes taking place in Danville’s River District.
The two-day event will kick off Friday around 5:30 p.m. and will end on Saturday around 11 p.m.
Traffic patterns will change. Beginning Friday at 5:30 p.m., Main Street will be closed from Floyd to Craghead.

On Saturday, Bridge Street will be closed from Newton’s Landing to the Community Market beginning around 6:30 a.m.

Festival schedule
Friday
5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. - Arts and entertainment. Various musicians will perform along Main Street.
7:30 p.m. – Glow with the Flow 5K. Sponsored by Riverview Rotary and Danville Parks and Recreation, the Glow with the Flow race is sure to brighten your night with a jog through the River District and along the Riverwalk trail.
The course begins and ends at the intersection of Market and Main.
D.J. Bobby White will provide lighting and sound to make it an unforgettable event.
The entry fee is $15. Register at www.PlayDanvilleVA.com. Click on “Programs and Events” and then “Races.” Cash will be accepted the day of the race.
7:30 p.m. – Coors Light presents The Breakfast Club. The Breakfast Club, an 80s cover tribute band, will perform on Main Street near the former Downtowner site. Refreshments will be available.
Saturday
9 a.m. – Danville Half Marathon. The annual Danville Half-Marathon will kick off festivities near the Worsham Street Bridge Memorial. The course will follow Dan River along the Riverwalk Trail.
Registration is $50. The field is limited to 300 runners.

10 a.m. – 3 p.m. – Danville’s Cardboard Challenge. As a part of the Global Day of Play, Danville Parks and Recreation will host Danville’s Cardboard Challenge and give area non-profits the opportunity to win up to $10,000.
During the challenge, participating groups will build or showcase a project made out of cardboard, tape and plastic.
The projects will be judged between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Winners will earn money toward their favorite nonprofits. Only nonprofits registered with the event will be eligible.

10 a.m. – 4 p.m. - Imagine Children’s Festival. The ultimate children’s festival returns to the Carrington Pavilion with interactive arts and entertainment.
The children’s section is free and includes Danville’s Cardboard Challenge, free dental exams all day by Colgate Bright Smiles Bus, free children’s health checks by PATHS, amusement rides, the Aerial Trapeze Academy, Home Depot workshops, performances by Captain Jim Illusionist and Virginia All Steel Orchestra, various displays and activities.

Danville Science Center will also be offering $1 admission.

10 a.m. – until – Showcase Ally. The festival’s Showcase Ally, located on Bridge Street, will feature over 40 vendors selling handmade crafts, jewelry, etc. as well as various businesses and local nonprofits.

10 a.m. – until – Art Show. Throughout the day, Danville’s brightest artists will showcase their work along Bridge Street.
10 a.m. – until – Entertainment. All day, various local and semi-local artists will perform on the main stage at the Community Market. Concessions will be available.
11 a.m. – Talent Show. Some of Danville’s up-and-coming stars will compete in a talent show on the main stage at the Community Market.
12 p.m. – Family Adventure Race presented by Danville Family YMCA and Get Fit Dan River Region.
Sponsored by Danville Regional Medical Center, the Family Adventure Race is a free race for families full of challenges that people of all ages can accomplish and enjoy.
The distance is less than 1.5 miles. The event will feature five stations that will contain an activity that will lead to the next station.
This is a team competition.

The start finish line will be at the Get Fit/YMCA table near the Community Market on Showcase Ally.
8 p.m. – Coors Light Presents Juliet Simms. The festival will wrap up Saturday night with a performance by Juliet Simms. Simms was the 2012 runner-up on the hit show “The Voice.”
Additional events include canoe trips, an international plaza and Zumba.
Food vendors and concessions will be available all day on Saturday.
