To the Editor:

I want to thank the nine Rapid City Council members and Mayor Sam Kooiker who stood up for what’s right by passing the resolution stating they are “gravely concerned” about potential uranium mining in and around the Black Hills.

What they did Monday night (8/19) was courageous and historic – they listened patiently to more than 30 public comments Monday evening as to why uranium mining has no place in our state and they voted on the resolution that evening!

Their brave work sends a message to the State of South Dakota that concerned citizens from all walks of life – ranchers, doctors, professors, Native Americans, and just ordinary folks do not want to put our precious drinking water at risk.

Uranium mining activity often leaves contamination that the public - read: taxpayers - has to clean up in the end. Water is life and without it, we are all at risk.

Please take a moment to thank the Mayor and the council members Clayton, Doyle, Estes, Lewis, Nordstrom, Roberts, Scott, Petersen, and Wright for stepping up to the plate!

Take action today!
