More than three years ago--in February 2010--President Obama announced that the Department of Energy would make an $8.3 Billion taxpayer loan to Southern Company and its partners for construction of two new nuclear reactors at the Vogtle site in Georgia.
That loan still has not been granted. Why?
Because the utilities want a sweetheart deal that would put all the risk on the taxpayers. And the White House's Office of Management and Budget has refused to go along.
It's time for the Department of Energy to withdraw this loan offer. Please tell new Energy Secretary Moniz that his first job as Energy Secretary is stop this loan now.
To make sure Washington hears us, your letter will also go to President Obama, the DOE's loan guarantee office, and your members of Congress.
The Department of Energy has extended the deadline for completion of the loan package several times. It's now due to be finished by June 30, 2013--but indications are the deadline may be extended yet again--an indication this loan is in serious trouble.
Both OMB and DOE have come under scathing criticism, especially from Congressional Republicans, over the failure of the Solyndra solar company loan granted by the Administration.
But the proposed Vogtle loan would be 15 times larger (and far riskier) than the one given to Solyndra.
Thus, the Administration is being much more cautious over the Vogtle loan than it would have been when first agreed to more than three years ago. And the more public scrutiny the Administration receives--and the more letters we send--the more likely that caution will lead to a cancellation of this loan. Nearly 17,000 letters were sent to former Energy Secretary Chu.
Now it's time to tell new Secretary Moniz that his first order of business is to end this loan and the entire nuclear loan program.
