Voters head to the polls Tuesday to pick who will carry the Republican banner in the race for the 16th District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates.
Chatham Attorney Les Adams and former Pittsylvania County Economic Development Director Ken Bowman are contending for the seat being vacated by Republican Donald Merricks, who is retiring. The 16th District includes most of Pittsylvania County, parts of Henry County and Martinsville.
Adams and Bowman also have different backgrounds.
Adams, the son of a tobacco farmer, has roots in the Dan River Region going back six generations. He shares the values of the people in the 16th District, and has not wavered in his views — pro-Second Amendment, pro-life and pro-traditional marriage, Crouse said. Also, he will not go to Richmond to raise taxes, Crouse added.
“ He’s not ashamed or shy with his conservative principles,” Crouse said.
Adams’ partnership at the law firm Adams, Elmore and Fisk in Chatham, makes him a small business owner, Crouse said. The firm recently opened an office in Gretna, he added.
In a news release, Adams said he was disappointed when he learned of Bowman’s use of business contacts — which he made while economic development director for Pittsylvania County — for personal gain “at the expense of the citizens he was obligated to serve.”
Bowman planned to use those contacts to try to attract companies to Henry County. Assistant County Administrator Greg Sides, in a letter to a business contact, said Bowman told him there would be a charge for Pittsylvania County to access those contacts.
