Natural Resources Defense Council urges federal agencies to implement a more protective regulation of uranium in situ leach mining in the U.S.
At the NRC Briefing on Uranium Recovery held on Feb. 20, 2013, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) urged the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to establish more protective regulations for the in situ leach mining of uranium. According to an NRDC report released in 2012, current regulations are not sufficient to protect groundwater in the long term. The EPA representative present at the meeting indicated that EPA's draft regulations would become available later this year.

Mining
The first and one of the dirtiest steps in the nuclear fuel cycle is uranium mining. Utah has been negatively impacted by uranium mining for decades and a nuclear power revival would likely repeat this dirty past. |
Utah's mining LegacyDuring the uranium boom of the 1940s and 50s, thousands of uranium mines were created in Utah and ultimately abandoned, leaving taxpayers with the bills estimated at $125 million dollars. Click here to learn more.http://healutah.org/nuclearutah/mining | Mining TodayUtah is now poised to dash headlong back into uranium mining. There have been 18,000 new claims filed in Utah and Colorado in the last two years. The Utah Geological Survey has already seen over 6,000 uranium claims filed.
