The decision to lift a decade’s old uranium mining moratorium has people across our area divided. As the debate continues in the Commonwealth, some Virginia lawmakers are speaking up since there's now a bill on the table to consider.

State lawmakers received the bill Friday. It says mining companies would agree to take all the risk in the event an accident should happen.

“I'm frankly very impressed that the folks in the industry would be willing to accept such strict regulations” said 8th district Delegate Greg Habeeb, who is one the state’s Coal and Energy Commission.

But others like Senator John Edwards say the risks do not outweigh the rewards.

“The risks are enormous. We're not just talking about decades or even hundreds of years, we're talking about thousands of years where the tailings would be radioactive for tens of thousands of years. If something went wrong it could be disastrous” said Sen. Edwards from the 21st district.

“The company could go bankrupt. we're talking about decades, hundreds of years, even thousands of years. they're going to pay for that. that's not likely” said Edwards.

While the bill was only introduced a few days ago, it is already drawing fierce debate among local leaders.
