Comments: I totally agree with the following statement from our Friend: "If I ever had any respect for the efficacy of our state regulatory agencies, it is gone. This UWG is an elaborate hoax to reenforce the Governor's mandate to establish a regulatory framework enabling the uranium mining industry in VA. I was informed by a VDH employee, their agency is not funded by taxpayers dollars, but by permitting fees. This is hardly reassuring. This mine is being shoved into this community by the sheer volition and underhanded wrangling of our Good old boy Governor and his minions. As long as the advancement of lesser Republican wannabes is controlled by this unseen iron hand, the subjects of Pittsylvania and the Commonwealth have no voice, the larger contributors like VUI and Alpha will determine our fate. Democracy is a farce in this new world order, our only appeasement is this panel of enforcers, trying to nicely mold public opinion to accept VUI and the Governor's edict."

CHATHAM --
Radon was a hot topic of discussion at the Uranium Working Group’s fifth public forum Wednesday at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex.
The evening’s key speaker, Dr. Maureen Dempsey, chief commissioner of the Virginia Department of Health, provided an update about the VDH’s work on the governor’s directives. There are several VDH programs involved in the working group.
During her presentation, Dempsey specifically addressed concerns about radon. She said the Division of Radiological Health would need to institute an indoor radon monitoring program to assess baseline public exposures if Virginia’s moratorium on uranium mining was to be lifted and mine and milling permits granted.
Furthermore, she said, radon released from the mine and mill would need to be monitored to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
