Uranium group puts focus on public health

Gov. Bob McDonnell’s Uranium Working Group was in Chatham last Wednesday for its fifth public session on uranium mining and milling.
About 200 people attended the meeting at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex, with “Keep the Ban” stickers competing with those proclaiming “Jobs, Mine Uranium, Energy.”

McDonnell established the uranium group in January to examine health and safety concerns, environmental questions and the economic impact of uranium mining.

The audience was given time for public comments at the end of the meeting. Twenty-five people signed up to speak, but some left as the meeting stretched on for three-and-a-half hours.

Seventeen spoke against uranium mining; only two spoke in favor. Speakers were given two-and-a-half minutes each.

Others, however, are skeptical. They aren’t convinced uranium’s benefits outweigh its risks.
“I feel like we are guinea pigs,” said Marshall Ecker, a member of the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors. “You will be using Pittsylvania County as a test site for regulations.”
Ecker is among three supervisors who last week sent separate letters and resolutions to the governor and lawmakers urging them to “do the right thing” and keep the ban.
The Board of Supervisors itself deadlocked 3-3 on the uranium resolution with one member abstaining from the vote.
Deborah Dix of Blairs has little faith in the state’s ability to protect citizens.
“Most of the mining companies out west are getting away with murder,” Dix said. “They are polluting the air and polluting the water.”
Tommy Motley of Gretna is worried about the county’s $200 million farming industry. Motley’s dairy is just over a mile from Coles Hill. He said there are a lot of unanswered questions.
Bonnie Mason of Lynchburg said Virginia Uranium will make billions off the mine at the expense of residents.
She urged people to hold elected officials responsible.
“Make them put their reputation on the line,” Mason said.
Elizabeth Jones of Chatham urged the uranium group not to “rubber stamp” the study.
“I think we should keep the ban,” Jones said. “The risks and stigma to our area will be devastating. ”
Another county resident, Patricia Hylton, agreed.
“What I’ve been hearing here tonight is no guarantee this will not poison us,” Hylton said.
“I feel like we’ve got a Judas selling Jesus. They want to get what they can and run. Who’s going to be left with the bill — taxpayers?”
