Uranium mining would harm Southside Virginia
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
In response to the news story, "Activists vow to prevent uranium mining in Pittsylvania": Uranium mining will harm Southside Virginia and the rest of the state. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) released a report that validates the concerns of Virginians. It also confirms that Virginia's wet climate and vulnerability to extreme natural events would present great challenges to mining. Exposure to uranium mining waste can lead to cancer, respiratory diseases, and kidney malfunctions.
On June 18, nearly 500 concerned Virginians attended a public hearing on the proposed uranium mine in Chatham. An overwhelming support on keeping the ban was displayed. I sincerely hope that Gov. Bob McDonnell's Uranium Working Group listens to the concerns of the NAS and of citizens. I urge the Virginia General Assembly to keep the ban on uranium mining.
