To the editor:
Uranium mining will not create a better future and it will not solve our fiscal woes. Budgets are being cut all across this nation, so this is nothing new.
But the advantage those other communities have is that they are not being threatened by a uranium mine that would retard real economic growth by keeping out viable industry that can make a real economic impact. No credible company would come here knowing the dangerous effects of uranium mining. Property values will also be greatly affected by uranium. Who would want to move to this area with the deadly legacy that this industry has left all across this globe?
With the high table of groundwater in this wet climate, mining uranium will only add to our fiscal woes with the toxic legacy of contamination of our wells and streams, it will leave mountains of radioactive tailings that ultimately we will all be stuck with. So we need to get our priorities straight and be more concerned with the health and well being of our children than with a few budget cuts. Without clean drinkable water and breathable air, not much else matters, does it?
What really angers me is the fact that a handful of investors and a uranium company ignores the fact that this deadliest of all metals poses a very serious threat to us all no matter what the consequences. Greed is one of the deadly sins and it sure applies here. Ask your county supervisor where they stand on this most important of all issues. What is more Godly than keeping a clean environment?
After all, it was created by God in its purest form. So for all things good and holy, let’s keep it that way.
Virginia is known for its dynamic history and its pastoral beauty which attracts millions of tourists each year, so let’s keep it clean and safe so we can maintain the right for our children, grandchildren, and future generations to a clean environment. Let nip uranium mining in the bud right here in Pittsylvania County and keep it all out of Virginia and send it back to Canada.
