Feds should ban it here, too

To the editor:

I read where President Barack Obama’s Interior secretary, Ken Salazar, has just announced a 20-year ban on new uranium mining in northern Arizona. The reasoning is to avoid contaminating the water in the Grand Canyon tourist area. This is in an area with little rainfall — and a sparse population.

My question is why is the Obama administration banning uranium mining in northern Arizona, but fails to ban it in our area? The Dan River Region has a lot more rainfall — and many more people living in close proximity to the mines themselves. Just asking.
