RICHMOND, Va.—
Late last week, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell asked state lawmakers to keep the moratorium on uranium mining in place for at least another year. That didn't stop opponents of uranium mining from making another trip to Richmond on Monday.
People from Martinsville, Danville, Halifax and other communities in southern Virginia arrived in Capitol Square wearing yellow ribbons and scarves. Members of the Keep the Ban Coalition aren't happy with the Governor's plan to have a state panel study the issue and begin developing draft regulations.
"He's trying to do an end run by having a study done and paid for by the state that would allow these people to mine," said Jack Dunavant.
"Uranium mining does not exist in Virginia," said Naomi Hodge-Muse. "To write a regulation for something that doesn't exist is an oxymoron."
