Tell the Governor: Radioactive Decisions Shouldn't Be Made in the Dark

Radioactive Decisions Shouldn't Be Made in the Dark

Radioactive Sign
Governor McDonnell has asked the General Assembly not to take up any uranium mining bills in 2012. The good news is that this means the uranium ban is likely to survive 2012. The bad news is that the Governor may be trying to sidestep the legislative process altogether.

He has asked his state agencies to write draft legislation to lift the ban and to create draft regulations. This puts the cart before the horse. The National Academy of Sciences just confirmed how risky uranium mining in Virginia could be, and called on the Commonwealth not to move forward without substantial public input and without extensive scientific and technical briefings.
