The Bulletin’s article on Wednesday, “Keep Ban on Mining of Uranium,” was encouraging to concerned citizens like myself. I write this letter in support and endorse the position taken by the delegates noted in the article, and in support of Del. Don Merricks’ letter which also ran in the Bulletin (Thursday).
The delegate’s statement was written very thoughtfully. It was informative and the right position for the General Assembly to take on the uranium issue. I appreciate the delegate stepping up to the plate. As a concerned citizen and activist pastor in Southside, I appreciate highly the delegate’s leadership on the issue.
With all of the unanswered questions, critical issues needing further exploration as well as health concerns and the health and safety of our water, the only appropriate public policy for the commonwealth is to maintain the ban.
Keeping the ban can be assurance that industry will fully support, demand and go an extra mile for (1) full disclosure of in and all information, (2) full and adequate participation of the citizens and (3) not demonize citizens, many of whom, like I, are not comfortable with the prospect of mining and milling in their backyard.
The delegate’s point was: “If only one thing can be interpreted from all these studies, it is the fact that there needs to be more study.” I agree.
Again, Mr. Delegate, thanks for taking a leadership position which I am sure many in your district and over the commonwealth would fully agree.
Sincerely,
Tyler C. Millner
