GOP proposing a full agenda: uranium mining

Commment:  Please write everyone and tell them to keep the uranium ban in Virginia!

BY CHELYEN DAVIS

The General Assembly kicks off its 2012 session Wednesday in Richmond.

In the Senate, the first order of business likely will be contentious, as Republicans try to declare a majority when the chamber is split 20–20.
That will require all Republicans to vote to organize with Republicans as a majority, and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling to vote with them to break the expected tie. Democrats have sued over the subject, but must wait until Bolling makes an actual vote to pursue their court battle

In the House, Speaker Bill Howell of Stafford is expected to be re-elected speaker.

At stake this session is a new two-year budget, uranium mining and a host of other bills.

Republicans hope that controlling both chambers and the governorship will give them more leeway to push their own agenda, but are also leery of allowing that agenda to contain too much in the way of polarizing social issues.
