Report unlikely to sway uranium mining opponents, supporters

It appears that a much-anticipated report on the safety of uranium mining in Virginia is unlikely to change the minds of mining backers and opponents.

During a forum on uranium mining today at the state Capitol, a key proponent and opponent of lifting a state ban on the mining indicated the study by the National Academy of Sciences is unlikely to change his position.

Cale Jaffe, an attorney for the Southern Environmental Law Center, which wants Virginia's 30-year-old mining ban to stay in effect, said the study will not determine absolutely whether uranium can be safely mined in Virginia.

Jaffe said the ban should be kept intact unless it can be proven that uranium can be mined safely in this state.
