Chamber breakfast to feature uranium report

Posted: Monday, December 5, 2011 4:17 pm

DANVILLE - Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce will feature the release of the RTI International study report on uranium mining and milling at its December Business at Breakfast.

The breakfast meeting, set for Friday, Dec. 16, from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., will be held at the Institute for Advanced Learning & Research.

Over the past year, with funding from the Danville Regional Foundation, RTI International has conducted a wide-ranging assessment of possible impacts of the proposed Coles Hill uranium mine and mill.

The study, which looked at a 50-mile radius of Coles Hill, recognized that socioeconomic impacts depend not only on jobs and spending in the region, but also on environmental quality, amenities, and the overall quality of life.

At the Business at Breakfast, RTI will present the results of its assessment, describing a range of possible environmental and socioeconomic impacts under alternative scenarios and discussing the experience of other regions in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world that have experience with uranium mining and milling.

The presentation will summarize the study approach, data, and findings.

The study report, which will be released the same day, compiles information that stakeholders in the region and elsewhere can use to inform their assessment of the proposed project.

The meeting, which is open to the public, costs $20 and includes a buffet breakfast.

Reservations are required and should be made by Friday, Dec. 9, by calling the chamber at 836-6990, by emailing chamber@dpchamber.org , or by registering online at www.dpchamber.org
