Gloves come off over Pittsylvania County supervisor's newspaper column



Comment;  Thanks Mr. Ecker, uranium mining has never been mined safely anywhere in the world, The French are failures at the whole nuke cycle!  The other five dudes are scared of the uranium group or may be investors!  Keep the Ban!

Staunton River District Supervisor Marshall Ecker received a tongue-lashing last week from fellow members of the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors over comments made in his June newspaper column.

The column, which is published monthly on the editorial pages of both the Star-Tribune and Altavista Journal, criticized supervisors for not supporting a motion by Ecker at the June 21 meeting on well testing around the Coles Hill uranium site near Chatham.

Ecker wanted supervisors to send a resolution to the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy and Department of Environmental Quality requesting Virginia Uranium Inc. to pay for well tests as a "benchmark" for future uranium mining and milling.

Supervisors failed to second Ecker's motion. Under the board's rules, a motion that doesn't receive a second cannot be discussed.

"I thought the job of being a supervisor was to serve the people of Pittsylvania County to the best of our ability," Ecker wrote in his June 29 newspaper column.

"At the June 21 Board of Supervisors meeting five board members felt that representing the welfare of the citizens of Pittsylvania County was not their job.
