Much of the stimulus money the U.S. Department of Energy’s environmental management office has pledged to speed up the Atlas mill tailings cleanup in Moab already has been spent.
The office said in its latest update that $72.6 million of the $108.4 million budgeted for the cleanup has been spent so far.
Overall, DOE cleanups nationwide are getting nearly $6 billion. About $3.4 billion in payments already have been made.
In addition, the stimulus work has generated 27,817 jobs at environmental management sites since early 2009.
About 286 of those jobs have been at the old Atlas site, the removal of 16 million tons of uranium-contaminated tailings from the banks of the Colorado River
