Six competing firms have submitted proposals to conduct a study of the socio-economic impact of uranium mining in Virginia.

The Uranium Mining Subcommittee of the Virginia Coal and Energy Commission had put out a call for the bids. The socio-economic report would complement a scientific study by the National Academy of Sciences and is funded by the Tobacco Commission.

The report is expected about this time next year.

The Register & Bee of Danville reports that the subcommittee is expected to decide on which firm to hire during a public meeting in December.

Virginia Uranium Inc. proposes to mine a huge 119-million-pound uranium ore deposit near Chatham.

However, Virginia has had a moratorium on uranium mining since 1982, and this ban would have to be lifted by the General Assembly before any mining could take place.

Katie Whitehead of Chatham, chairman of the Dan River Basin Association Mining Task Force, which supports the uranium mining moratorium, says it’s unclear whether or not citizens will have a chance to publicly share comments about the non-proprietary sections of the submitted proposals.

Pitching proposals are AngelouEconomics, Chmura Economics & Analytics, Center for Regional Analysis at the School of Public Policy at George _Mason University, Center for Social Science Research at George Mason University, Jack Faucett Associates and Old Dominion University.
