Pittsylvania Co. Board of Supervisors Vote Against Uranium Mining

Pittsylvania Co., VA - In a special meeting Wednesday, the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors took a firm stance on uranium mining.

  Board members have visited the issue several times in past months.

But in a 5 to 1 vote, they passed a resolution opposing legislation seeking to end the ban on mining.

After listening to the concerns of county residents, most of them agreed that this was the right decision.

The resolution was amended and accepted, stating that the supervisors oppose uranium mining and would not be in favor of any legislation put forward to lift the moratorium.

Former Board Chairman Tim Barber presented the resolution after drafting it with the help of former Vice-Chairman James Snead. Barber admitted to being on the fence about uranium at first; he voted against a resolution in October that would have expressed the board's opposition.

But after getting more information from both sides of the issue, he says he decided that mining is not right for the county he serves.
 
The supervisors will send the resolution to lawmakers in Richmond.

Their hope now is that it's not too late to make an impact on the final decision.
