Pittsylvania County emergency services has set up cooling centers at fire and rescue stations across the county, said Jim Davis, the county's emergency services...
Original story:
Friday night's storms left residents in the Dan River Region without
power and prompted Pittsylvania County to declare a state of emergency Saturday
morning.
About 10,000 residences and businesses were without power Friday
night in Danville, and about 1,130 still had no electricity just before noon
Saturday, said Ken Ashworth, director of power and light for Danville.
No power means no air conditioning in the scorching heat for those
residents.
The storm that swept through the region broke at least 10 poles in
the city, Ashworth said. They will have to be replaced.
In west Danville, debris — including felled trees and branches —
littered the streets and sidewalks. Sections of West Main and Virginia Avenue
were closed while workers cleared detritus.
City Manager Joe King is encouraging friends, family members and
churches to help those without power. King said he knew of no cooling centers or
shelters set up in Danville Saturday morning.
Crews worked through the night and will continue until power is
restored to all the city's customers, King said in a news release. Outages have
been widepsread throughout Danville Utilities' 500-square mile territory, King
said.
Public works crews have been clearing downed trees and limbs in the
city. More than 50 trees were reported down from the high winds, King said.
"Our employees are working as hard as they can to get power restored
and fallen trees removed from public streets as quickly as possible," King said
in the release. "I'm very proud of the quick response and dedicated work of
public safety, utilities and public works employees in responding to this storm.
Some customers simply couldn't get through to register their outages. I
apologize for that."
The city's outage call-in system will soon be replaced by a more
reliable system, King said in the news release.
Danville has received no requests for cooling centers, King said.
The city will make arrangements to establish cooling centers if a need is
determined, King said.
Property owners in the city who have experienced damage to buildings
are encouraged to contact their insurance companies, King said. Claims involving
damage by city-owned trees should be reported to the city attorney's office at
799-5122.
As for Pittsylvania County, officials there declared a state of
emergency at about 10 a.m. Saturday, said County Administrator Dan
Sleeper.
About 15,000 people in the county were without power after the storm
and the county's emergency service is setting up cooling centers at fire
stations along U.S. 29 from Blairs to Hurt for those that have no electricity,
Sleeper said.

Extreme heat and humidity demands attention for safety and health
A heat advisory continues in effect today for the Danville area, and it will
once again be in effect on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
With the arrival of the extreme heat and humidity, and the forecast for it to remain in place through Independence Day, the Danville Fire Department urges citizens to take extra precautions to stay safe and healthy.
Fire Marshal Shelby Irving said one of the most important steps is to keep watch on friends and neighbors who may not have air conditioning. Citizens should call or visit them at least twice a day, and if possible, invite them to their home.
Air-conditioning is the number one protective factor against heat-related illness and death. During conditions of extreme heat and humidity, spend time in locations with air-conditioning such as shopping malls, public libraries, senior centers and other public buildings.
Older adults and young children are particularly susceptible to extreme heat. They experience an elevated response to the extreme heat, and therefore they can develop heat-related illness much quicker than other segments of the population.

Approximately 1,000 Danville Utilities electric customers remain without power
As of 4 p.m. Saturday, Danville Utilities reports that approximately 1,000 of
its electric customers remain without power. New reports, however, still are
being received.
Single outages are scattered throughout the service territory, but the areas with the largest concentration of outages are U.S. 58 East (mostly in Halifax County, which includes Virginia International Raceway), Windsor Heights, Golf Club Road and Route 360.
The outages in these locations are the result of broken utility poles.
