Gretna area lands on endangered historic sites list

Preservation Virginia has listed the Whitehorn-Banister Rural Historic Landscape in northeastern Pittsylvania County as one of the most endangered historic sites in Virginia.

Sonja Ingram, field representative for Preservation Virginia, announced the list of 11 sites during a press conference along Markham Road — located in the Whitehorn-Banister area — in Gretna.

"The impending threat to the region arises from the construction and operation of a uranium mine and mill proposed at Coles Hill, within the rural historic landscape," Ingram said. "In addition to the loss of its characteristic rural qualities, this development could lead to groundwater contamination, noise pollution and real estate value loss and hinder future heritage tourism initiatives."
