Gretna, VA - Uranium mining is back in the spotlight this weekend as The Roanoke River Basin Association hosts two nationally renowned researchers.
Dr. Robert Moran studies water quality management and Paul Robinson is the research director for the Southwest Research and Information Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
At a press conference in Gretna Friday morning they made their points very clear:
"The ground water is what's at risk in the area around the mine," said Robinson, who's worked as a technical uranium mining expert for years. "Being active today rather than radio-active tomorrow. Having people tell their legislators and other decision makers how concerned they are and what they're concerned about, so that they're not waiting until the impacts occur."
Moran pointed at predictions made by past and present studies. He says those predictions are worthless.
"The predictions that were made about a site 30, 40 years ago, when you come back 40 years later and see what's the reality, predictions are horrible," said Moran
The Roanoke River Basin Association Fall Board Meeting featuring the two speakers will be held Saturday, November 5 from 9 a.m. to 2p.m. at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research in Danville.
A $10 registration fee is required if you wish to attend. You can register online: http://blog.rrba.org/?page_id=53
