Danville, VA - To gear up for Election Day in November, the Chamber of Commerce held a candidate forum Friday in Danville.Six state office candidates came out to make sure their views were heard. They addressed everything from education to uranium mining. But for all of their differences, there was one thing everyone agreed on.
"We're not training enough young people to take the jobs that those companies want," said Republican Frank Ruff, who's running unopposed for the 15th District Senate seat.
"To some form of trying to create jobs in our area," said Danny Marshall from the 14th District seeking re-election and is also unopposed.
"We work day in and day out to bring jobs to our area and that's what it's all about," said Republican Don Merricks, from the 16th District, also seeing re-election unopposed.
The three men vying for the hotly contested 20th District senate seat were all on hand. Front runners Republican Bill Stanley and incumbent Democrat Roscoe Reynolds made it clear their priority is the economy.
Yes uranium can bring a lot of money and it can bring a lot of risk," said Independent Jeff Evans.
"We've got to make sure, before the uranium mining ban is repealed, that our water supply is not put in jeopardy," said Reynolds.
Three unopposed candidates also attended the forum: Danny Marshall, Don Merricks, and Frank Ruff.
The chamber will be hosting a second forum on October 21 for the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors.
