Uranium mining in the United States has typically been done in drier climates in states like New Mexico and Arizona. Hurricane Irene dumped as much as 13” of rain in parts of Virginia.
Major rainfall events, such as this, risk overwhelming uranium mining and processing operations and causing radioactive waste to contaminate downstream water supplies.
