International Indigenous Gathering will focus on uranium mining

Comment: Please review all the videos below because mining corporations do not care about the people near future or present uranium mining sites. The uranium corporations just care about the profit it will make off mining and heck with humans. Demand our leaders all over the world to ban uranium mining!

2010 is the Year of Indigenous People and we want to celebrate and honour indigenous people from around the world by holding a gathering in Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia on July 9,10 and 11.

The gathering will focus on the environmental impacts of mining, proposed uranium dumping, and tourism on indigenous communities in this region and Australia wide.

The mining companies often seek to divide indigenous people by holding out false promises of jobs and the payment of compensation to pay for improvements to the infrastructure that should by rights be a governmental responsibility.

There are many indigenous activists campaigning against environmental destruction and there will be plenty of workshops and forums at the gathering where they will be able to share information and strategies.

Indigenous world views are largely neglected in debates around social change, the impact of globalisation and climate change. However, Indigenous peoples have long histories of resistance, and differing models of social organisation and ways to protect homelands.

Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Individuals and Organisations from Australia and around the world are invited to attend and showcase the work that they are doing to promote Indigenous Self-determination, advocate for Human Rights and the empowerment of communities, and struggle for the protection of country and traditional culture.

The gathering will take the form of forums, workshops, information sessions and spaces in which to learn language, Indigenous symbols, traditional medicines, bush tucker, local history and more. Evening activities will include Indigenous film screenings and hopefully some local music and local dancers.

Camping location and food will be provided at minimal cost to non – Indigenous participants and free for indigenous.

The conference is organised by the Latin American Solidarity Network (LASNET), Barbara Shaw Mont Nancy Camp Town and Friends of the Earth (FoE).
