The public can still comment on the provisional committee chosen to uranium study
The National Research Council chose 13 people after a nomination process. The NRC and National Academy of Sciences opened a 20-day period that closed this past week for the public to comment on the selections.

Yet, the public can still comment on the provisional committee up until its first meeting, which hasn’t been scheduled, said Jennifer Walsh, NRC/NAS spokeswoman.

The public is free to share information about the study throughout the process by e-mailing study director David Feary.

More than 120 people from Virginia and across the country collectively wanted the public comment period extended to allow all Virginia residents time to provide input on the provisional committee. They also requested public hearings also be conducted in all locations that could be affected by uranium mining.

“This is a whole state issue. This is not just Coles Hill,” said Jack Dunavant, chairman of Southside Concerned Citizens, who signed the comment. “As open as you can make this, the better.”

To comment, e-mail David Feary at dfeary@nas.edu

As I understand it, the committee will not make any determination as to whether or not uranium can be safely mined (or milled and wastes stored) in Virginia.
