Halifax Town: Resolution to the Roanoke River Advisory Basin Association: resignation of major investor in Virginia Uranium Incorporated

Flooding on S. Meadows, area of proposed uranium tailing ponds:  headwaters of Bannister River

Comment:  How come the local and city leaders are not asking for the same thing?  Half of then are a scared of their shadows!  No to uranium mining and milling!

In other business Tuesday night Council authorized Town Manager Carl Espy to send a resolution to the Roanoke River Advisory Basin Association calling for the resignation of Walter Coles from the group, pointing out that Coles has a conflict of interest in serving on the association.

The resolution states that Walter Coles is chairman and a major investor in Virginia Uranium Incorporated, a company that proposes to mine uranium, a radioactive element in the Banister River watershed at Coles Hill.

Furthermore, the resolution states that it is physically impossible to contain pollution from uranium mining and once water is polluted, it is impossible to clean up.

With Coles being a member of the association which was formed to protect and preserve the waters of the Roanoke River, Council recognizes that Coles has a conflict of interest by serving on the association and respectfully asks that he resign or be removed from the group.
