But, there are many who say it's a dangerous endeavor: Uranium mining   .

A public education forum Sunday put on by a group called Clean Water Alliance wants South Dakotans to know the facts about uranium mining.

The group says it threatens the water supply.

In order to dissolve uranium, miners have to inject chemically treated water into the ground.

Doctor Lillias Jarding says there is a great risk for contamination, even if mining companies follow all of the rules and regulations set forth the by the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

"Whenever there are spills or leaks they're either on the surface or they're underground. It's very hard to pick them up and monitor them and very difficult to control once it happens," Jarding said.

Companies like Powertech, which wants to mine near Edgemont, say they'll follow the rules, adding that the water in the area is already unfit for drinking.
