Weld's League of Women Voters resolves against uranium mine

Comment: Has the League of Women Voters in Danville and Pittsylvania County, VA taken a stand? No to Uranium Mining and Milling now!

The League of Women Voters of Greeley-Weld County has joined the list of groups that oppose a planned uranium mine in Nunn.

The League unanimously passed a resolution opposing uranium mining in Weld.

Hoffman said the League opposes mining because of the danger it presents to the environmental conservation of natural resources, most specifically water.

The Larimer County League took its stance on the issue — also in opposition — in 2009. The research Larimer members conducted was used by Weld members in their decision.

Hoffman said more than 90,000 individuals have signed petitions opposing the mine, yet many people in the Greeley area are unaware of the importance of the issue.

The Weld County Board of Commissioners will have the final say on whether Weld's proposed uranium mine will be allowed.

The cities of Greeley and Fort Collins and towns of Nunn, Timnath, Wellington, New Raymer, as well as several organizations, have passed resolutions against the mine.
