Dan River has crested at 23 feet, 3 inches and that’s as high as it’s going to get, said Danville’s director of emergency services.
Flood waters from Sunday’s heavy rains should recede in the next several hours and residents are advised to avoid the waters, said Bernard Brown, director of emergency services.
“(By) the next eight to 12 hours, we’ll see a drastic drop in the water level,” Brown said Tuesday morning.
Brown advised residents to stay away from standing and moving waters and not to enter barricaded areas.
The National Weather Service had predicted Dan River would crest at 27 ½ feet and then lowered its estimate to 25 feet, 4 inches, Brown said. Last night, the river crested at 23 feet, 2 inches and began to receded only to rise again to 23 feet, 3 inches around midnight, he said. The NWS considers 17 feet to be flood stage for Dan River.
