To the editor:
For the past few years I have been trying to keep up with the issue of the possibility Uranium Mining at Coles Hill in Pittsylvania County.
I have read opinions from both sides.
I have read letters and articles concerning environmental issues and economic issues. I would like to present one more consideration that I not aware of having been addressed.
What, if anything, will be done to secure the uranium deposit from terrorists, in the event that the moratorium on uranium mining is lifted? After the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the United States pushed Resolution 1540 through the United Nations, which requires strict security measures on nuclear materials. What would this mean for us?
I have scoured the Internet and found disturbing articles from other countries speaking of the very real threat of terrorist organizations hijacking uranium for use in dirty bombs and possibly other weapons of mass destruction, in order to wreak havoc upon civilization as we knowit. I’ve also read about the security that would be required to make sure it doesn’t fall into the hands of terrorists.
Would the U.S. military be a presence in this area to protect the uranium from terrorists? Would an outfit such as Blackwater be hired to protect it? Is the threat of attracting terrorists to this area something else the citizens of this area want to deal with, in addition to the very real threats of destroying the environment and health of everyone in this area and beyond?
Before any final decisions are made by the state government on whether to lift the moratorium on uranium mining in Virginia, I think that this is a very real issue that needs to be addressed publicly.
It is a matter of safety not only to local residents, but people all over the world.
The monetary gain of an elite few is not greater than the peace, security and well being of the entire world.
