A northern Saskatchewan exploration site has been closed indefinitely and its crew evacuated following the death of a worker on Feb. 21, said Emil Fung, spokesperson for Can-Alaskan Uranium.
The man, 54, from Newfoundland, was operating a D-6 cat bulldozer when it fell through the ice on Cree Lake 200 km northeast of Buffalo Narrows. Described by Fung as "fresh to camp", the man was working for DJ Drilling of B.C. when the incident occurred 2 km from shore around 9 a.m. His family has asked that his name not be released, said RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Paul Dawson.
Can-Alaskan Uranium, headquartered in Vancouver, is waiting for a report from the Saskatchewan mining inspector before deciding if and when it will re-open the site.
"We don't know whether to restart or not," Fung said.
Roughly 20 workers, many from northern Saskatchewan, have been flown out. "Some said they don't want to go back," he said.
At the time of the incident, the bulldozer, which weighs 18 tons, was leveling the ice so that workers could put a drill on it.
The company's website says the Cree East project is a joint venture between Can-Alaskan Uranium and four Korean companies.
