REGINA - The Saskatchewan government is paying an additional $36.2 million to clean up an abandoned uranium mine site in northern Saskatchewan.
The Gunnar site is in the Uranium City area, and the Saskatchewan Research Council, which has been managing the process for the past four years, has identified more work that need to be done.
Project costs have also risen beyond the original estimates developed prior to 2004.
Energy and Resources deputy minister Kent Campbell says environmental protection and the public health and safety of northerners are his government's prime concerns.
The province says the mining companies cannot be responsible for cleaning up the site because they no longer exist.
The federal government is expected to commit equal funding to the Gunnar cleanup.
