Va. company to assess uranium mining impact

URANIUM STUDY

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) A Richmond company has been selected to conduct a socio-economic study on the impact of mining uranium in Southside Virginia.

A legislative committee heard six presentations Wednesday before unanimously selecting Chmura Economics and Analytics.

The $200,000 study will look at issues such uranium mining's impact on the local economy, property values and local revenues.

Virginia Uranium Inc. seeks to mine and mill a 119-million-pound uranium ore body in Pittsylvania County.

Virginia has had a moratorium on uranium mining since 1982.
