NAS Meeting on Uranium Mining in Danville, Va. – Dec. 13 and 14

A National Academy of Sciences committee examining the potential impacts of uranium mining in Virginia will hold a meeting in Danville, Va., on Dec. 13 and 14 to gather information and hear from local interest groups and community members.

The committee’s study is exploring the scientific, technical, environmental, human health and safety, and regulatory aspects of uranium mining, milling, and processing in Virginia; it will not recommend whether uranium mining should be permitted, nor will the study include site-specific assessments.

During the morning and afternoon sessions of Dec. 13, the committee will hear presentations from area groups and organizations. The evening session will consist of a town hall meeting where community members will have an opportunity to address the committee during a two-and-a-half hour public comment session. The public must sign up at the event to speak, and comment time will be limited to three minutes per person. The

Dec. 14 session will have a presentation describing the results of Virginia Tech research related to the Coles Hill uranium deposit.

The open sessions will take place on Dec. 13 from 8:30 a.m. to noon, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Institute Conference Center, 150 Slayton Ave., Danville, Va. (Near intersection of Route 29 and Route 58)
